Hornets squeeze it in the end

Hornets' form took a dive in the first half with everything looking a bit disjointed. With the skipper returning to umpiring duties it was Amersham who played the better hockey. Despite not having a goalie they used the extra outfield player to advantage by passing the ball well. Hornets resorted to long hitting which the well organised Amersham defence dealt with effectively. Amersham's pressure allowed them to go two goals up despite some hard work in defence by Dob, Rob, Mark and Gerard and some sharp saves by Phil. Hornets were reduced to just getting one short corner until Roland picked up a loose pass on the left wing and struck a beautiful hard cross to Dave who had the simplest of shots to score into an open goal.
After a little hard talking by the skipper at half time and a reshuffle of the pack Hornets settled down to a better passing game. Amersham's defence though continued to hold out until Jas set up Graham who slipped past the defence on the left and fired home a flick just inside the post. the game then picked up the tempo with Amersham attacking down their right making Nigel, Paul and Seb work hard to stem the flow. Amersham earned a couple of short corners that Phil dealt with admirably and were unlucky not to go ahead but Hornet's defence held out. Gradually the midfield runs and passing allowed Hornets to set up another play just outside the D with Jas finding Alan on the left this time whose shot managed to beat the packed defence and slide into the bottom right corner. A good fight back against a well organised side.
