A Festive ode to a well fought game.

On a wet and miserable day only the Vets ventured out to play,
a team of eleven players at the start, it was enough this week to look the part.
Trying to remember the early instruction, Roland pushed back the ball in the wrong direction.
Eventually getting under way it was Winchester who dictated the early play
by passing right and going wide it was left to Rob and Andy to stem the tide.
In the centre newly acquainted , George and Kevin became inundated
but with wiles and cunning and good interception they stirred the team into resurrection.
With Mark dealing cards all of the night it was no surprise he looked a bit white
but by tumbling, turning and single hand worming dribbled past players on the right.
Winchester's persistence deceived and flattered and by working the line they scored where it mattered.
Alan unaccustomed at the back, was soon turning defence into attack
despite illness being a bit of a hinder his passes unerringly found Dave Mackinder,
whose flying runs down the wing caused Winchester's defence some suffering.
At last his tricky move along the line won a short corner just in time.
With a plan in place and Roland's injection the ball came fast in the right direction
with a drag to the right and quick side step Graham sent the ball into the back of the net.

The second half became more of the same with both sides efforts creating a game.
Whilst Winchesters passing became unerring Hornets accuracy became despairing,
with many a miss and a heartfelt shout it was left to Phil to keep the ball out.
One save after another drew a sigh of relief but Winchester second caused us grief.
Spurred on by Nigel's chasing and flair to gather the ball from almost thin air
We pressed and pressed without success moving the ball from right to left.
In one such attack there was quite a huddle, with all on the goal line getting into quite a muddle
was it a foot or unerring backstick? well whatever it was it was a clever old trick.
With time running out and legs all tiring Mo blew the whistle to see hope expiring.
No Santa's gift of a win in this Sport so we all retired to enjoy some Port.
