Missed opportunities meant a tight outcome

With the attacking style of play established Hornets went into this game looking to build on their win against Epsom. It all started well with both wings making in roads into the Havant defence but the ball did not fall kindly and when a thunderbolt from the skipper just grazed the outside of the post Hornets felt that it might not be their day. Some sloppy passing kept giving the ball back to Havant who used their counterattacking moves well with their fast forwards starting to pick up ball in space. Some great tackling and interceptions by George backed up by Andy and Dob meant that Havant's possession did not got them any shots on goal. Eventually a well worked move down the right found Dave whose run and shot beat the keeper for Hornets first. Thereafter some good midfield pressing kept Havant pinned back in their own half for long periods but without getting any rewards. Hornets seemed to be in control so it was disappointing that one counterattack was not properly cleared after a series of good saves by Phil, and Havant made the most of it by getting a penalty flick award which they converted.
Second half Hornets upped the work rate with Nigel, Graham and Seb controlling the midfield and with help from the forwards pressed Havant back into their own half. Havant made a few breaks down their right but Paul E at left back kept them in check and set up some great passes for Mark and Roland to create space and attack the Havant goal with impunity. However the Havant goalkeeper had different ideas and his many saves kept Havant in the game. Hornets fifth short corner finally eluded him as Mark's reverse hit shot was deflected in by Seb on the far post. With not much to do at the back Paul W came forward and showed his versatility by making a number of skillful runs and getting one first time shot to just skip past the post. In the end Hornets contained the game comfortably but were disappointed their possession did not convert itself into more goals. A fast (by Vets standards) and enjoyable game with Hornets pleased they picked up their second win in a row.
