Sonning 2s (1) v Bracknell 1s (2) [04.03.12]

Bracknell ladies were determined to get back to their winning ways in a late away game against Sonning HC. Bracknell started with purpose, showing their intent and winning a short corner within the first couple of minutes. The pace of the game then slowed and much of the first half was spent in the middle of the pitch. At times Bracknell made it difficult for themselves by giving away possession and Sonning always appeared a threat with one player hanging high near the D. But good communication and some excellent saves from stand in goal keeper and Man of the Match Emma Cox meant that it remained 0-0 at half time. Bracknell were stronger after the break, passing with accuracy and supporting each other with better movement off of the ball. After some good play down the left hand side of the pitch, the ball was played into the D and Caroline Apsey was there to coolly sweep it into the goal after 15 minutes of the second half. Sonning scored shortly after from a quick break and intelligent play to bring the score line level. They continued to put pressure on the Bracknell defence and won a number of short corners which were defended well, in particular by Gemma McLean who used her physical presence to calmly clear the ball when Sonning looked certain to score. With 5 minutes to go McLean contributed at the attacking end , deflecting Yellie Powleys initial shot from a well planned short corner, into the back of the goal securing the win.
