Here's the match report:
After a hard fought win last week against Sonning, the 3rd XI travelled to Newbury and Thatcham for their 2nd game of the season, where spirits were high, the captain was back and some new players being introduced into the team.
Unfortunately it wasn't to be, as they fell 7-3 to their opponents, but the effort of each and every player gave could not be faulted as the team and the individuals gave a good account of themselves and fought till the final whistle, with goals from Shaggy x2 and Mike on his return.
Newbury opened the scoring shortly into the match and followed with 2 further goals before the half. There were flashes of good play scattered throughout the half but couldn't find a way through the defense.
We started quickly in the second half making the score 3-1 with a goal from Shaggy off a resultant short corner. But not long after mistakes at the back from Ben and Bear resulted in 2 further goals for Newbury making it 5-2. We responded well putting their defence under pressure and getting our reward with a 3rd goal, 2nd for Shaggy with a brilliant volley that ricoshays off the post and over the line.
Newbury then made it 6-3 through an unmarked forward beyond out backline and scoreing a further goal to make it 7-3 before the final whistle went, ending the game and the scoring. Notable chances throughout the half from Aaron, Des and Shaggy leaving the team with a lot of positives up front just need to get the ball over the line.
It was a valiant effort from the whole team but mistakes ultimately lifted their score and resulted in a loss for the team. Plenty of positives to take away from the game, along with some great positivity from the umpires regarding our performance.
Next week the 3rd XI travel to Henley in our 3rd away game in a row looking to bounce back from the loss.
MOTM: Mike for some great tackles and a goal, honourable mention for Shaggy 2 goals, including a spectacular volley.
DOTD: Ben with a poor backpass to give way for Newbury to score.
