Fight back falls short

Guildford started this match at a fast pace and their superior running and passing had Wokingham pressed back into their own half for most of the first period. Following a series of good saves by Phil Bell, the Wokingham keeper, the pressure told and Wokingham were two goals down by half time. To compound Wokingham’s misfortune Garry Fisher had to retire injured at half time.

Fortunately, Guilford agreed to provide a replacement from their substitutes’ pool and after a rousing team talk by Captain, Graham Lee, Wokingham started the second half with greater purpose. Despite the start a sharp breakaway allowed Guildford a third goal and put them into what looked like a comfortable lead. However, Wokingham’s patient build up rewarded them with a short corner which Jas Jheeta firmly struck home. Shortly afterwards another short corner for Wokingham produced a shot from Seb Crebbolder and after two attempts, Roland Mear forced a back stick flick past the Guildford keeper.

Again Guildford responded to make it 2-4 with an instinctive strike but after some good work by Alan Baines on the left, the Guildford defence uncharacteristically switched off allowing a sharp cross to reach Mear who put the ball into an empty net. With a draw then looking a possibility, Wokingham conceded again after failing to clear properly from defence making it 3-5. The Home side continued to press forward and from another short corner shot struck by Jheeta, Mear deflected the ball into the goal for his third of the day. With the score 4-5, Wokingham finished the stronger side with a number of shots going just wide of the post which was an encouraging and positive note on which to end an enjoyable but demanding season.
