Once again Hornets were up against a strong Guildford side, which was a challenge for the first game of the season. Both sides proved to be a bit rusty with Guildford making uncharacteristic errors. With Anis marshalling the defence Hornets held up well and started to make some good midfield moves through Mark and Graham allowing Dave Mackinder to show his speed and skills up front. It was Dave Badger though who opened the scoring with a neat reverse stick flick coming in from the left. But within minutes Guildford had levelled the score. Hornets pressed again and received a number of short corners the last of which Roland managed to guide home after a number of attempts by other team members. Despite a goal line save by Nigel Guildford came back hard and equalised just before half time.
The Second half saw some resolute defending by Dob and some great goalkeeping by Phil to keep Guildford at bay. A well worked attack up the left by Hornets was scrambled away off the line by Guildford only for them to make a quick break and score their third goal. Their fourth came soon after with a very well worked move down their left. Hornets kept working hard and were rewarded with a two short corners the second of which Alan neatly put away. thereafter the game was evenly matched but Hornets did not look like getting the equaliser. Missed short corner opportunities were rued in the end. MOM - Phil.
