Wycombe vs South Berkshire
This was an away game that South Berkshire knew they must win to continue their progression up the league table. After a motivational speech from their captain, South Berkshire attacked from the opening whistle and were rewarded ten minutes into the game when a beautifully timed pass from Alison Eastwell was skillfully converted by Holly Bentley.
Despite continuing to apply the pressure, South Berkshiure gave away a short corner shortly before the end of the first half. The deflected strike was saved as it rebounded off Lyndall Davitt’s helmet but, as the defence failed to clear the ball away cleanly, the opposition were awarded a second penalty corner which they were able to squeeze past the right post.
South Berkshire’s took the lead again early in the second half when Kelly Hancock managed to find a defender’s foot in the D. A well executed one-two manoeuvre between Yellie Powley-Williams and Sophie De’ath saw Powley-Williams added to the score sheet.
However, Wycombe then threatened to level the score on several ocassions when miscommunication amongst the South Berkshire defence allowed the home team to apply the pressure. Luckily, with only a few minutes to go, a quick turnover ball by Chrissie Laird put South Berkshire on the attack once more and, a clever upgrade by Ally Miller soon won them another penalty corner. Confidently stopped at the top of the circle by Jo Partridge, the ball was struck well but then thrown into the air as it collided with the stick of the Wycombe runner. As the ball fell down towarsd the goal, Jemima Simpson smashed it home to secure the 3-1 victory for South Berkshire.
Next week, the team play Oxford Ladies 2s with a 13.30 pushback at home and are looking to repeat this performance for to secure fourth place in the league table.
